So. This is the day. The start of our last home stand. And it's our last non-Flyers opponent of the regular season. And, in all likelihood, one last playoff spot to decide. The 8th and final in the Eastern division.
We've all been rooting for the Rangers since childhood - season after season we've laughed and cried with them. We've seen them hoist the cup and we've seen them drop their head's in despair at another lost season (more often the latter thing).
Our 82 game season has dwindled to a precious three. Into our historic Madison Square Garden comes our Original Six nemesis - the Montreal Canadians - a team that has selected their entire nation of countrymen as their nickname. (And a team also called the Habs for reasons I never fully understood.)
It was just a few short days ago that we looked down at the Habs from 7th place. We wondered if the Panthers would put them out of the playoffs - and half-rooted for Florida to catch them and ruin their 100th season.
Well, now those half-roots for Florida have come back to bite us. Because the 8th place team the Panthers are seeking to push from the playoffs is not Montreal anymore.
Now it's us.
And after 3 days of worrying and powerless scoreboard watching - finally - we get the chance to do something about it.
The Garden will rock tonight. And the mission is clear: BEAT THE CANADIANS. Beat them tonight - strengthen our hold on 8th and close to within a point of 7th.
And then, root for those Broadstreet Cheese steaks to smack down the Panthers. We want to wake up tomorrow with a 2 point edge.
This year's story is still being written. The Cup has not been handed out yet. Neither has the 8th seed in the playoffs. It's clear that no one is going to give us anything this year.
We've got to stand up and take it for ourselves.
And it starts tonight.

Gotta start fast. Montreal has injury problems, they have played 3 games in 4 nights, they got in to new york late last night. The rangers have had two days off. Gotta put the Canadians down early.
ReplyDeleteAs I say that, the rangers take a penalty, called on Redden.
