2nd Period Update from Carolina

I am not actually in Carolina, but needed to rant a little. (Sidenote: Dave, I am not sure about these recent posts of yours. Rangers getting taken from the rear? Carolina not blowing? I find these may be a little suggestive for our younger audience?)

MICHELLETI AND ROSEN...STOP THE GIRARDI AND ESPECIALLY STAAL, JERK FEST! JUST STOP IT!

More on the overall recap of the game later (Lots of excitement, tons of power plays, stupid penalties, big hit on Hank could jeopardize the season), but this is all about the young defense pairing for the rangers.

All game long I keep hearing about how great girardi and staal are playing. (To be clear again, I have always liked girardi. He plays solid positional hockey. He's nothing special, but he is a solid, 2nd, or 3rd line defenseman, or should be. Staal has gotten absurd hype since day one. He has little to no offensive game, and is consistently in awful position defensively. He is a "average young defenseman with limited offensive skill" that's it, for now anyway) But the way these announcers talk, you'd think the two of them were leading the rangers to the playoffs. (Although Rosen making mistakes is not a stretch considering on THREE occasions this game he has said "save by Lalime" for Carolina...Cam ward is in net)

Let's recap. Less than 4 minutes into the game, a MUST WIN road game, a game where the rangers HAVE to have a strong start, they take a penalty. Who takes it? Girardi, called for roughing. A penalty even michelleti describes as "stupid". Carolina goes on the powerplay and...scores, 1-0 lead. (First power play goal the rangers have given up in 7 games)

So the rangers come back to tie on the first NHL goal for Corey potter. With the score now 1-1, Eric Staal and carolina rush into the rangers zone, Staal is against girardi one on one, which is trouble. Of course he BADLY dekes girardi and skates in on hank but instad of shooting, he shuffles a quick pass to a Ray Whitney, who shoots on Hank. Hank stops him but there is a rebound, and a WIDE OPEN net for Chad LaRose. LaRose, somehow is standing infront of the net with NO ONE on him. They show the replay and Michelleti says, "Someone has got to get that man, you can't just leave him alone on the doorstep". They show another angle on the replay, and they show Staal doing NOTHING, just standing up and gliding along, watching LaRose skate right past him and coral the puck and slap it into the empty net.

So so far, girardi takes a bad penalty to set up the first goal, and girardi and staal (especially staal), have a complete defensive lapse to set up the second goal.

In fairness to Girardi, he made some ammends and scores the tying goal to make it 2-2 towards the end of the second. (His first goal in 54 games....when your scoring once every 4 months, you gotta make ALL the defensive plays)

Ofcourse Rosen and Michelleti are going nuts with the girardi goal. And Rosen follows up the 54 game scoring drought comment with, "Well, he and staal have been so shut down on defense", RIGHT as he says it, a carolina defenseman throws a pass right up the center of the ice, about 90 feet to a streaking Ruutu who blows by Staal again for a break away on Hank. Staal ends up taking a penalty on the play.

The two of them have been AWFUL tonight, in a must have game, but you'd never know it. I must be watching a different game.

After two periods, Rangers are outshooting Carolina 32-14, thanks to 4 first period power plays, all in a row. But the score is 2-2....
